What is Obama’s reason for taxing married couples more than singles?

He says he will raise taxes for married couples making over $250,000 and for singles making over $200,000.

Because he can’t grasp basic trickle down economics for some reason.
My wife and I don’t make that much, but my folks make well over 250K and I assure you that they have worked harder than anyone to get it. Obama is buying votes from his poor, uneducated base that think all rich people have not worked a day in their lives and that their money was just given to them.

Its always been that way, the marriage penalty that is.
January 20th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
probably because married couples earn more income, than singles and it’ll give the singles a tax break.
good call if you ask me.

Think about it…his supporters who want to keep sucking off the government teet are not married..too much baby daddy. Not all but a lot.

Do you understand what you’re saying? He’s taxing singles more.
Married couples need to make $50,000 more than singles to get taxed as much as single people.
Reread your comment.

either way he is just increasing taxes on the upper middle class. I don’t see any issue with it…if I made that much I would be happy to give more to taxes. those taxes are what runs the country

that makes perfect sense, couples make more together as a unit. so you tax them more. what hard to understand about that?
whats the point of taxing some one with no money?

He knows queers can’t marry so he is giving them a break
He just doesnt get trickle down

wait a day and he will change his mind on this item but be sure that he will tax everything in sight if given the opportunity.

Because we are so taxed emotionally from being married, we won’t notice another buck here or there.

Its the same problem that most politicians with no real vision have, not enough creativity (or guts) to generate revenue without increasing taxes, like looking into ways of how to limit funding to different causes or the government.

you just answer your own question yamster obama will tax anyone who is making over 250,000 a year because they are rich .
February 10th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
Througout the past, married couples have been given a tax break while single people have not. In the past, many women were homemakers and this taxbreak was needed. Now a days, it is very common place for both sexes to work. This law is just simply catching up with the times.

He still hasnt explained the taxes on married couples making 150,000 combined , he also said anyone making more than 150K were rich. He said this I will lower taxes on people who make LESS than 150k and raise them on people who make over 250k. 150k-250K he is leaving as a MYSTERY.
February 14th, 2009 at 8:16 pm
this is an irs decision, not a presidents.
February 15th, 2009 at 6:00 am
Because they are given more a a percentage of tax cuts for no apperant reason

I can’t believe you drew this conclusion!
Suppose I’m single and I make $225,000/year. Obama increases my taxes. Now I get married, and my spouse doesn’t earn any income. What happened to my tax increase? It goes away.
The facts you presented underneath your question suggest exactly the opposite of the conclusion you drew in your question!
The tax system is set up to assume that the combined income of married people will, on average, be greater than the income of single people. That’s because these days, in most cases, both halves of the couple work outside the home.

I guess it’s what he thinks will help working families.

Married people make more obviously. They also have more ways to get more back such as property, children, etc. Singles foot most of the tax bill as they usually do not have as many tax deductions.
February 20th, 2009 at 12:04 am
Because he can if elected.
If we give him the chance he’ll taxes us all to death.
He wants to spend $1 Billion dollars fixing what Russia destroyed in Georgia a few days ago.
Hell we didn’t have a thing to do with it but we need to spend cash we don’t have repairing what Russia has done.
So Obama plans to raise the tax rate from the bottom up this includes all Americans.
Don’t believe what they say when running for office because it will change once they are elected.

The idea is that married couples have the potential to be a two-income household. Barack Obama wants to make things fair and work toward closing the gap between rich and poor; if you choose to marry, you are two people, and therefore should get taxed as though you were two people. Single people should not get taxed for the worth of two people just because they choose to be single. They should be taxed as a single person and a single-income household.
If for some reason, one of the people in a married couple is unable to work, there are Unemployment benefits. That’s why Unemployment was invented.
Please don’t think it’s just to let moochers continue mooching. Taxing singles LESS means that they take home more money, meaning that they are not considered as “poor” as they were before, actually making them LESS qualified for government aid. So in reality, taxing singles less gets them closer to being more independent and capable of surviving without government aid.

Here’s a good reason:
Majority of corporations avoid federal income taxes - study?.v=2
Married couples have always been taxed higher since I was a kid. They pay one rent and share utilities. However as an accountant I can assure you high wage earners have ways to escape paying taxes as that article points out. Shifting funds offshore, transferring money to kids in a lower tax bracket, deferring bonuses from one year to the next, taking checks that are below the IRS bank reporting threshold to name a few. Not to mention dummy corporations. These loopholes should be closed and the tax breaks repealed.
Regarding the answer about the trickle down economics very few economists and accountants believe it works. Companies thrive on saving money and increasing sales not plants and employee headcount. So thinking a company will take those tax breaks and actually hire and build factories is ludicrous and makes no sense.
Also why should couples making 250k per year with no intention of building anything get a tax break when some guy/girl making 50k can use it more? The 50k guy will spend the money on everyday items and since there are substantially more $50k per year people than $250k folks that group as a whole will spend more driving the economy.
That trickle down crap is a fairy tale and typical American b.s. We need to think beyond the one man with a thousand dollars and start catering to the 10,000 people with a dollar.

Duh, because they have a combined income, which means their expenses are combined as well. This is the way the taxes have worked for years, it’s not anything new. Now find your next rant and rave about Obama. I’m sure it’s coming.
Misty is cloudy on the tax system. LOL
