Why is Ricky Ponting allowing easy singles by keep keep fielders on boundaries? Is it the right strategy?

According to Ian Chappell, this kind of strategy works against dumb cricketers, the good ones will keep taking singles.

It works against Sehwag….he gets out to a defensive fields…you remove slips and pack your off-side then the chances are that he will always give a catch

Ian Chappell knows dumb cricketers well.
But this is a first time I agree with the man. I really think that Ricky’s captaincy will be in the spotlight here. He is not sowing the ability to adapt to having a lesser team without the likes of McGrath and Warne. He seems to run out of ideas faster than many.

The wicket has become easy to play on. If he tries to stop singles at this stage, the batsmen are going to get away with boundaries. By stopping the boundaries, he is trying to stop the Indians from getting to a very high score. They are hoping that the Indians would want to accelerate and try something crazy.
