Why does yahoo have to have this singles advertiziments now? I don’t think it is appropriate and many people I have talked to feel the same. Especially on the front page. thanks for your consideration in this.

Yahoo isn’t completely to blame… a lot of the blame rests on the parents. They are to busy to watch their children… so just letting them on the computer seems like a good solution. Keeps them busy. Unlike TV, the Internet isn’t controlled by the FCC, and so this ends up bad, quite often.

And along with those, there’s the WSPCA ads with the ill/mistreated animals. I know they want to advertise but I’m 16 and even I hate to look at those ads. I can’t imagine how children would react to it.

I sort of have to agree with this. Plus, singles adds don’t just pop-up all over the computer. Typically the adds you are talking about pop-up when you are logging into Yahoo personals or a Yahoo chat room. And psychiatrist and psychologist and other authorities always offer ways to filter what your child sees on the internet. Learn to use these filters. Place the family computer in the family room. Know which sites your children are viewing. While there are somethings that are inappropriate for children to be viewing it’s not all just the fault of the advertisers. Trust me yahoo chat rooms are no place for children. And there have been countless times where I, as well as other adults have encountered children in chat rooms saying things that are far worst than what’s seen in yahoo singles adds. It’s clear that their parents aren’t around and have no idea what’s going on, or if parents are around they are just totally clueless.
The answer is children should not be given free reign of the internet. Yes it’s a wonderful research tool for school aged children, but that doesn’t mean it should be abused. And, that also doesn’t mean that parents should blame everything that their children happen to stumble upon on advertisers. Take a little responsibility as a parent. I know when I was a child I couldn’t watch television or see a movie without my parents knowing every detail. I couldn’t buy a magazine without my parents first checking to see if it was appropriate. But these days kids pretty much can do whatever they want, then when they see something that might be considered “inappropriate” for a child their clueless parents want everyone else to suffer.
So, my advice to you is put your computer in the family room. Use filters to determine what sites your child can go to. Other than time spent on the computer for homework limit internet time to no more than 2 hours a day. Encourage reading and outside activities. Oh, and if your child is old enough to use myspace be sure to monitor that carefully. Trust me what children are telling each other is far worse than what they can see in some yahoo singles ad.
