How are people who do not have a yahoo personals profile able to contact me?

I ask this question because men will contact me using my yahoo instant messenger ID but yet they do not have a personals profile. On the personals site you can′t contact someone unless you are a paid subscriber. There must be some work around that they are using. I′m curious as to what it is.
